The German artist, Michael Kutzer, in
tarot circles known as the creator of
Michael`s
Tarot and tarot pers, has
begun to develop a new deck by painting
the Major Arcana in the old masters'
technique. The size of the original
paintings is 70 x 51 cm (28" x 20").
These will become the prototypes of a
printed deck. All figures shown in this
series are dolls. The artist not only
"translates" the conventional tarot
figures into dolls, but makes his very own
interpretation on the cards' meanings.
Thus, the "Fool" doesn`t show the known
version of a fool followed by a dog, but
an innocent child surrounded by
newspapers, which in turn show some of the
most urgent current problems -- for
example: violence, animal trials, and
sexism. Untouched by these problems, the
doll is walking his personal way.
"Justice" is using her sword no more,
and has taken the bindfold from her eyes.
The lily at her side is the sign of
guiltlessness.
The thoughts behind these paintings are
largely influenced by A Course In
Miracles, which, according to Kutzner,
he has begun to study since meeting the
American tarot collector Susan Arenz.
Susan and Michael discuss every painting.
The series is progressing rapidly, and is
estimated to be complete within a year
(mid-2003).
