Surreal photographic tarot that both spurs and satisfies the imagination. The images have a touch of tasteful eroticism, and the general meanings of the cards are imparted more by mood than by concrete symbolism. Five prototype copies of the major arcana were printed as decks. The entire set of 78 cards was later printed in a limited edition of 1,000 copies.

As usual, we can't even begin to decipher the Korean text for this deck, so we're going with the English word we can read for the title: Broccoli. It seems likely the deck was published -- or at least uses licensed characters from -- the manga published by the Japanese company, Broccoli International. Whether the deck represents a sampling of characters from multiple Broccoli product lines, or just from a single Broccoli series whose name we can't translate, we couldn't say (although we're betting on the latter). At any rate, it's more of the same here -- cute, big-eyed manga/anime characters that purported represent the tarot archetypes.

1987 limited edition tarot from Lo Scarabeo's 'Fantastico' series. Artist Alessandro Baggi is an Italian comic book illustrator (Dampyr, l'Altra Faccia del Fumetto); his tarot images are deliberately exagerated and often disturbing. The Follia deck has 38 cards, the first 22 of which correspond to the standard major arcana. The remaining cards represent the 12 signs of the zodiac and the four elements. The deck title translates into English as 'The Tarot of Madness.'

78-card tarot that attempts to combine the classical and the modern. Stylistically, the illustrations have a Renaissance-y feel; according to the accompanying book, the creators were attempting to imbue the deck with the flavor of the Visconti-Sforza deck. Symbolically, however, the deck owes much to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck of the early twentieth century -- while not exactly a RWS clone, the deck expressly attempts to incorporate elements from the latter influential deck. The minor arcana pip cards are non-scenic. 78 cards and 64-page explanatory softcover book in cardboard shelfbox (lid on side)

Rendition of Oswald Wirth's majors, included with a French Canadian edition of Wirth's famous Le Tarot: des Imagiers du Moyen Age. Whether this is another variation of Georg Alexander's illustrations (based on Wirth's descriptions) is not entirely clear. Published by Claude Tchou, Editeur, in 1966. 22 cards in pocket at back of book.

Barely tarot-ish at best, despite the name, the illustrations of this 24-card deck still hold a certain Eastern appeal. The style seems a bit like traditional Indian art as rendered by some Chinese anime artist.
