Broccoli Tarot
Unknown

southkorea

Unknown

Offline inventory / in stock

As usual, we can't even begin to decipher the Korean text for this deck, so we're going with the English word we can read for the title: Broccoli. It seems likely the deck was published -- or at least uses licensed characters from -- the manga published by the Japanese company, Broccoli International. Whether the deck represents a sampling of characters from multiple Broccoli product lines, or just from a single Broccoli series whose name we can't translate, we couldn't say (although we're betting on the latter). At any rate, it's more of the same here -- cute, big-eyed manga/anime characters that purported represent the tarot archetypes.

Dan thinks this is a dreadful book, but Jeannette thinks its one of the best on Qabalah... and Jeannette does the ordering. Granted, the reader needs to take the author's cultural and temporal context into account when reading the text -- it was originally written and published in the 1930s -- but if you can get past the parts where certain ideas are only hinted at and keep in mind that science and sociology have 70+ years of advancement, there's a great deal of depth and insight to be gained here. And in general, the tone is more ego-free than most texts published on the subject of Western Qabalah. Dan however says, “It’s the dogmatic approach of ‘Western’ Qabalah that creates issues.” Perhaps some take DF's book too seriously.

The Royal Fez Moroccan Tarot Deck
Roland Berrill, Michael Hobdell

Switzerland

Out of print

Offline inventory / in stock

In the late 1950s, Roland Berrill -- the founder of the MENSA organization -- came up with the idea of the Royal Fez tarot deck. He hired artist Michael Hobdell to execute the artwork. Hobdell died shortly after completing the project, and Berrill died before his original print run of 500 decks was marketed. Eventually, around 1970, the decks were picked up and marketed by Rigel Press, Ltd. Later, U.S. Games and AGMueller published a non-limited edition (ca. 1975) that remaiined in print for a number of years.

Berrill's deck was purportedly based on a legend that tarot was a remnant of secret societies that once existed in Fez, Morocco. Indeed, the the black-and-white backgrounds of the images might suggest Moroccan landscapes, architecture, and culture. However, the foreground imagery is undeniably lifted from Waite and Smith's work.

The publisher states: “The mystery of the runes is as much a part of Celtic mythology as the passing of the seasons and the rhythm of the natural year. What's more, the relationship of the Sun, the Moon and the Earth, and the turning of the year, inspired the first divinatory systems used by people of ancient times.

The highly distinctive Runic Tarot includes a major arcana of 24 runes in a zodiac wheel with traditional Norse significance. This is coupled with a minor arcana of four suits, each reflecting a season. The Runic Tarot will connect you with the seasonal imagery of the northern tribes, and will enrich and guide your life.”
