The Book of Shadows Tarot, Vol. 2: So Below

Designer(s), Artist(s): Barbara Moore, Sabrina Ariganello, Alessia Pastorello
Country of Publication: Italy
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2013
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
The second volume of a twin, Wiccan-inspired pair of tarots, the Book of Shadows: So Below deck takes a more familiar approach to tarot symbolism than its Volume 1 counterpart. Here, the card names correspond with the traditional titles, and the minor arcana suits are not replaced, as they are in Vol. 1, with their elemental attributions. The scenes depicted are more grounded in everyday life, as opposed to the deity/ritual/spiritual figures that dominate the first volume. Together, the two decks provide an interesting spectrum that spans from the spiritually sublime to the comfortably mundane.

Tarot of the Boroughs

Designer(s), Artist(s): Courtney Weber, George Courtney
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2010
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Self-described as "a contemporary urban deck set in New York City," the Tarot of the Boroughs is a fun addition to that subgenre of tarots that might be classified as "Slice-of-Life" decks. However, in contrast to some of the better-known classic photographic decks, such as the Mountain Dream Tarot and the Siri New York Tarot, the pictures are in color instead of black-and-white. Several noted New York writers and visual/performing artists modeled for the deck, including Moby and Mwt Shekemet. The images are sometimes patterned after the Waite-Smith meanings, and sometimes not. But regardless of how you interpret them, there's definitely some nice food-for-thought-and-discussion to be found in the 78 tableaus that Weber and Courtney present.

Breaking the Rules Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Estelle Daniels, Peggy McDowell
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2015
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Charming, independently-published deck filled with contemporary and delightfully whimsical illustrations. Many of the characters depicted on the cards represent noted members of the tarot community (including Jeannette and Dan as the Queen and King of Pentacles -- we're honored!). Two additional majors are included: Magic (XXII) and The Jolly Joker (XXIII). While the images are clearly rooted in the RWS tradition, there's a lot of extra, clever touches here that are worth closer examination.

Broccoli Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Unknown
Country of Publication: South Korea
Number of Cards: 22
Publication Year: Unknown
Publication Status: Unknown

Description:
As usual, we can't even begin to decipher the Korean text for this deck, so we're going with the English word we can read for the title: Broccoli. It seems likely the deck was published -- or at least uses licensed characters from -- the manga published by the Japanese company, Broccoli International. Whether the deck represents a sampling of characters from multiple Broccoli product lines, or just from a single Broccoli series whose name we can't translate, we couldn't say (although we're betting on the latter). At any rate, it's more of the same here -- cute, big-eyed manga/anime characters that purported represent the tarot archetypes.

Cagliostro Tarot Deck

Designer(s), Artist(s): Bruno Sigon
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 1981
Publication Status: Out-of-Print
Reference: Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. III, pp. 572, 573

Description:
Originally published in 1912 as ‘Il Destino Svelato dal Tarocco” by Bruno Sigon as an Egyptian-based Trump set (the 56 minors were taken from a Milanese pattern) based on the work of Papus. This deck has been published many times. There are red backed Italian (Modiano S.p.A. called Cartomanzia 184) deck printings in both Italian and English, and a blue backed one printed under license by US Games (called The Cagliostro), the latter of which contains keyword translation errors on several cards (keywords are based on Etteilla’s 1783 Thoth Deck).

Carnivale Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Orange Velvet Design Studio
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2002
Publication Status: Out-of-Print

Description:
This deck was originally created for the HBO show “Carnivàle” by a design studio that neither understood Tarot or the show, and thus successfully produced a deck that reflected neither. In their defense, the company has stated that they were hired for the project at the last minute, managed to deliver the results in under a week, and then were not even paid for their efforts.
