Tarot Card for Lovers

Designer(s), Artist(s):
Country of Publication: Japan
Number of Cards: 22
Publication Year: 1981
Publication Status: Out-of-Print

Description:
Sometimes we have to wonder about these Japanese-to-English translations. The imagery is pretty standard RWS stuff -- nothing particularly focused on the topic of love in the illustrations (although it's possible the accompanying book focused on the subject). Rather, the commonality that's unmistakeable in this deck is that the people are replaced by cats in every picture. We'd say we've seen this a thousand times before, but since the deck was published in 1981, we have to admit that it probably predates the big wave of cat tarots that seems to have begun in the 1990s (and continues through to the present day).

Tarot Lovers' Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Karyn Easton
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2012
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
The simple, clean design style of artist Karyn Easton graces the Tarot Lovers Tarot. The illustrations are not packed with symbolic minutiae, but the details are well-chosen and appealing. Inspired more by historical decks in the Marseille style, the pips are attractive, but non-scenic. The cards themselves are oversized, but largely due to the unnecessarily large, black outer rim; this is one of those decks that seems to be begging for a "borderectomy".

Lowbrow Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Aunia Kahn, Russell J. Moon
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 22
Publication Year: 2012
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Although cover-credited to Aunia Kahn and Russell Moon, this majors-only deck is actually a collaborative project involving 23 different artists. As might be expected from such an endeavor, the cards are largely contemporary, occasionally even experimental, in style. The images are striking and thought-provoking -- perhaps a bit too varied in style for most readers to use with clients, but definitely an intriguing, food-for-thought compilation that's worthy of study.

Ludy Lescot Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Ludy Lescot, Patrizio Evangelisti
Country of Publication: Italy
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2011
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Named for its creator, the Ludy Lescott Tarot represents one reader's journey through the imagery of the cards. Though designed by Lescot, the deck illustrations are executed by artist Patrizio Evangelistii. There is a somewhat dark, and definitely dramatic, flair to the deck's style.

Mage: the Ascension Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Nicky Rea, Jackie Cassada, Richard Thomas, Sam Chupp, Joshua Gabriel Timbrook, Alex Sheikman, John Cobb, Larry MacDougall, Dan Smith
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 1995
Publication Status: Out-of-Print
Reference: Manteia issue #16, p. 40

Description:
Developed as a companion tool for the "Mage: the Ascension" role-playing system, this deck is surprisingly interesting and well-executed. Further adding to the delight is that the majors, and each of the four suits, was designed by different artists. The suits follow symbols meaningful in the game: Wands = "Questing", Cups = "Primordialism", Swords = "Dynamism", and Pentacles = "Pattern". Not necessarily an ideal deck for readers -- especially those who shy away from dark imagery -- but can be used as one hell of a storytelling deck.
