Lo Scarabeo Tarot (Deluxe Edition)

Designer(s), Artist(s): Mark McElroy, Anna Lazzrini
Country of Publication: Italy
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2007
Publication Status: Out-of-Print

Description:
Deluxe version. Here's an idea that's great in theory: combine elements from three of the most historically important tarots -- the Marseille, the Rider-Waite, and the Crowley-Harris (Thoth) deck -- to create something that provides the best of all symbolic worlds. Whether the results succeed, however, may depend on individual tastes. There do seem to be a few oddities added in here -- for example, why is the High Priestess admiring herself in a hand-mirror? At worst, the deck represents a noble experiment that may or may not work -- which is more than can be said of many other decks. On the other hand, such a deck could be just what tarot students need to broaden their view and encourage a fresh re-examination of tarot's roots and relevance.

The Tarot of Loka

Designer(s), Artist(s): Ralph Horsley, Alessio Cavatore
Country of Publication: Italy
Number of Cards: 80
Publication Year: 2014
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
While the U.S. distributor has promoted this deck as providing "a truly unique reading experience", the truth is this: this is not a divination deck. Instead, the Tarot of Loka goes back to tarot's true historical roots -- a card game. Designed with double-ended majors and modernized but non-scenic pips, the accompanying LWB provides no divinatory meanings; rather, rules for a card game variant of traditional tarocchi are explained. That said, this is a wonderful deck, with charming artwork perfectly suited to a gaming deck. If you haven't ever played the game -- but have been curious about it -- this could be the perfect deck for getting started in the wonderful world of recreational tarot. Includes two additional cards labeled Good and Evil -- just in case anyone insists on needing to make this into a cartomantic tool.

Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2004

Description:
78-card Taiwanese tarot deck featuring photo stills from the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. We're not convinced that the images selected for the minors are particularly meaningful from a standard tarot point of view. Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78

According to the authors, the original paintings were likely painted by Nostradamus' son, C├ęsar, and bear uncanny symbolic similarities to traditional tarot cards. In the minor arcana, the Matthews have chosen suit symbols to reflect their vision of Nostradamus' world: "Suns" for Wands, "Moons" for Cups, "Stars" for Swords, and "Spheres" for Pentacles. The court cards have also been retitled: "Apprentice" for Pages, "Astrologer" for Knights, "Astronomer" for Queens, and "Alchemist" for Kings.
