Tarot Lenormand

Designer(s), Artist(s): Ernest Fitzpatrick, Pietro Alligo, Alma de Angelis
Country of Publication: Italy
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2006
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
The illustration style of this deck is loosely based on the pictures found in Lenormand-type decks... but the overall structure strives to remain true to traditional tarot. Whether this deck succeeds in blending the two cartomantic traditions is probably a subject of debate, with those who enjoy working with the Lenormand decks more likely to find value here than those who prefer their tarots more... tarot-y.

Tarot Life Cards

Designer(s), Artist(s): Connie Lehman, Irene Clurman
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 22
Publication Year: 2012
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Although this set of oversized majors-only cards is subtitled "Using Your Birthday to Chart Your Course", we found that you don't have to worry about factoring in your birthday at all in order to find the imagery contained here useful. There's nothing wrong with the authors' birthday approach -- but we think the images are stylistically and symbolically intriguing enough to stand on their own merits as a normal tarot deck. Primitive with a child-like innocence, the Tarot Life Cards aren't as intricate as some other similar decks, such as Monica Clio Sakki's Sakki Sakki Tarot. But theres much to be said for elegant simplicity -- and with the Tarot Life Cards, the deck creators largely succeed in using a little to say a lot.

Description:
Purportedly inspired by Llewellyn Publication founder Llewellyn George's Welsh roots, the Llewellyn Tarot features Celtic myth and lore, set in the landscapes of Wales. Much of the major arcana draws upon Arthurian mythos, while the minor arcana largely re-renders the traditional Waite-Smith designs in ancient Welsh settings with a fantasy twist.

Lo Scarabeo Tarot (Standard Edition)

Designer(s), Artist(s): Mark McElroy, Anna Lazzrini
Country of Publication: Italy
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2007
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Here's an idea that's great in theory: combine elements from three of the most historically important tarots -- the Marseille, the Rider-Waite, and the Crowley-Harris (Thoth) deck -- to create something that provides the best of all symbolic worlds. Whether the results succeed, however, may depend on individual tastes. There do seem to be a few oddities added in here -- for example, why is the High Priestess admiring herself in a hand-mirror? At worst, the deck represents a noble experiment that may or may not work -- which is more than can be said of many other decks. On the other hand, such a deck could be just what tarot students need to broaden their view and encourage a fresh re-examination of tarot's roots and relevance.
