XIII Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Nekro
Country of Publication: Spain
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2014
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Original tarot illustrations by gothic illustrator Nekro make up this dark but highly stylish deck. Each image is rendered in black-and-white, with a punctuating splash of red. The thick, ornamental border, however, overwhelms some of the illustrations -- but was probably deemed necessary in order to provide enough room for the four-language titles present on the cards. The pips are non-scenic, but use unique symbols: bird skulls for wands, hourglasses for cups, curved daggers for swords, and keys for pentacles.

Xultun Tarot (1st edition)

Designer(s), Artist(s): Peter Balin
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 1976
Publication Status: Out-of-Print
Reference: Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. I, pp. 287-290

Description:
First edition of the Xultun Tarot, which differed from subsequent printings in several ways: 1) The cards were larger (3-1/2 in. x 5-3/8 in., vs. 2-15/16 in. x 4-9/16 in. for the later editions), 2) The backs were brown, rather than green with the feathered serpent icon printed twice, rather than repeated many times, and 3) The typography used for the minor arcana cards was substantially different, and the titles were given in English only (rather than in several languages, as presented in the later editions).

Xultun Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Peter Balin
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 1976
Publication Status: Out-of-Print
Reference: Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. I, pp. 287-290

Description:
Later edition of the 78-card deck, with fully illustrated pips, featuring artwork rendered in a traditional Mayan style. Elements from Central American native culture are substituted for many of the common symbols -- for example, a circular Mayan calendar is used for the 'Wheel of Fortune' card. This edition was intended for international distribution, and so the card titles on the minor arcana are printed in several languages.

El Tarot de la Y

Designer(s), Artist(s): Juan Manuel Martinez Casasus, Carlos Sacristan
Country of Publication: Spain
Number of Cards: 22
Publication Year: ca. 2004
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Slightly cartoony in appearance, this Spanish majors deck has a more spiritual theme at its core: the pilgrimage of el Camino de Santiago (Santiago's road). Elements that can be seen along the pilgrimage route have been interwoven into the illustrations. The accompanying book, fortunately, gives wonderful information on the symbolism of the details. The bad news, however, is that no English translation of the book is available for those who do not speak Spanish.

Yeager Tarot of Meditation

Designer(s), Artist(s): Marty Yeager
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 1983
Publication Status: Out-of-Print
Reference: Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. I, pp. 290, 291

Description:
Mass market edition of the originally artist-published deck simply titled The Tarot. Designed as a meditation deck, the majors are dreamy and symbolically intriguing. The minors are pips only. Interesting sidenote: when the deck went to mass market publication, the publishers requested that the nudity of the original be removed -- although the breasts of the female characters still largely remained uncovered.

Yi-King (Tarot Oriental de Paul Iki)

Designer(s), Artist(s): Paul Iki
Country of Publication: France
Number of Cards: 80
Publication Year: 1978, with subsequent reprintings
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Set of 80 divination cards, plus three plastic half-dollar size chips, that begin with the I-Ching as their basis and then move beyond it. 64 of the cards represent the traditional I-Ching Hexagrams. The other 16 cards are divided into two repeating sets of 8, each of which depicts an I-Ching style trigram. By drawing two trigram cards, the reader can generate another I-Ching hexagram; the correspondences are detailed in a cross reference table included with the cards.

Yoga Tarot (standard edition)

Designer(s), Artist(s): Massimiliano Filadoro, Adriana Farina
Country of Publication: Italy
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2008
Publication Status: Out-of-Print

Description:
Hmmm... yoga and tarot. It seems theoretically like a synergistic match. If we knew more about yoga, we could better evaluate how successful the deck is in blending the two disciplines. It looks yoga-y enough, however, and the artistic style has the general colorful and decorative feel of east Indian art. Lovely, appealing, simultaneously energetic and restful... on the surface, at least, this tarot seems to do a reasonable job of incorporating a yoga-esque feel while largely remaining true to the basics of tarot. This entry represents this title in the standard (deck only) configuration.
