Japaridze Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Nino Japaridze, Steve Lucas
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2014
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Parisian artist Nino Japaridze provides a surreal view of tarot in this fully-illustrated 78-card deck. Some of the images evoke the stark, internally-contrasting style of Dali, while others feature more flowing forms like those found in the works of Max Ernst. In any case, this is hardly a derivative deck -- it includes some strikingly original approaches to iconic symbols. The suits are renamed Fires, Tides, Winds, and Gardens, while the court cards include Jester, Stranger, Queen, and King.

Jean Dodal Tarot (Tarot de Marseille Jean Dodal)

Designer(s), Artist(s): Jean Dodal, Jean-Claude Flornoy
Country of Publication: France
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2009
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Jean-Claude Flornoy presents another amazingly restored edition of a classic tarot... this time, the full 78 cards of the Dodal Marseille deck. In an effort to determine the most accurate approach to the restoration, Flornoy was able to study the two remaining original Dodal decks in existence -- one from the French National Library and the other in the British Museum. The accompanying LWB contains fascinating details about the similarities and differences between the two decks, providing yet more insight into this historically significant deck.

The Jesus Deck

Designer(s), Artist(s): Ralph Moore, William Atkins
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 52
Publication Year: 1972
Publication Status: Out-of-Print

Description:
This (obviously) Christian-themed deck was not designed as a cartomantic tool. It is, instead, essentially a deck of 52 "playing cards" with scenes and quotes from the New Testament (specifically, the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) intended to impart Biblical lessons to the players. In effect, it may not be much different that how some scholars believe that tarot cards were used at one time -- that is, with scenes intended to familiarize "players" of tarocchi games with the hierarchical structure of church and state (and various virtues and vices) during the Renaissance. However, there seems to be some misconception about the deck's purpose, as we at Tarot Garden have had a few inquiries about this deck, as if one might use it for fortune-telling or Christian pathwork (which one always could, of course, especially the latter). So -- into our database it goes. The deck's suits are named after the four famous gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John, but the structure of each suit is as one might expect - Ace through 10, with a Jack, Queen, and King in each suit.
