The Golden Dawn Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Robert Wang, Israel Regardie
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Status: In Print
Reference: Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. I, p. 256

Description:
This was the first tarot deck published for the mass market featuring the tarot images as described by the esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn. Illustrated by Robert Wang, under the direction of Israel Regardie, the style of the artwork is a bit unaccomplished compared to some (though not all) Golden-Dawn wannabees that have come after it. The deck arguably remains, however, one of the most influential tarots of the late 20th-century -- providing a viable alternative to the Waite-Smith and Crowley-Harris decks.

The Golden Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Liz Dean, Melissa Launey
Country of Publication: England
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2008
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
78-card tarot that attempts to combine the classical and the modern. Stylistically, the illustrations have a Renaissance-y feel; according to the accompanying book, the creators were attempting to imbue the deck with the flavor of the Visconti-Sforza deck. Symbolically, however, the deck owes much to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck of the early twentieth century -- while not exactly a RWS clone, the deck expressly attempts to incorporate elements from the latter influential deck. The minor arcana pip cards are non-scenic. 78 cards and 64-page explanatory softcover book in cardboard shelfbox (lid on side)

Golden Tarot of Klimt

Designer(s), Artist(s): Alexandrov Atanassov
Country of Publication: Italy
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2005
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Images rendered in the style of Austrian symbolist painter Gustov Klimt comprise the illustrations of this fully-illustrated 78-card deck with gold foil accents. The almost impossibly gaunt figures found on some cards may disturb some viewers; others may find the veiled and not-so-veiled eroticism of Klimt's work to be off-putting. But for those that find appeal in Klimt's work, this elegant and well-executed tribute deck should not disappoint.

The Gorgon's Tarot

Designer(s), Artist(s): Dolores Fitchie
Country of Publication: U.S.A.
Number of Cards: 78
Publication Year: 2014
Publication Status: In Print

Description:
Striking black-and-white images in round frames comprise this self-described "graphic arts project" by Dolores Fitchie. Of the deck, the artist herself says: "As to the cards' meanings, they are not so much interpretations as descriptions, little stories I told myself while I was drawing, and redrawing, and revising, and thus revisiting them." The large round cards may be awkward to handle for readers, but the deck offers a very clean and intriguing set of illustrations for use in spreads. Two cards -- the Devil and a significator card called The Blind Gorgon, include some splashes of red; the remainder of the deck is strictly black-and-white. Other than the significator card, you'll find no snake-haired temptresses here; according to text inside the box lid, the title comes from the artist's personal nickname.
