Popular tarot deck depicting 19th century-style artwork and costumed figures. Early North American editions used French titles on the cards; later editions changed the titles into English. The High Priestess and Hierophant cards are represented by (and titled after) the Roman deities Junon and Jupiter respectively. The pip cards are unillustrated, as per the Marseilles style.

An obvious tip-of-the-hat to the forthcoming end of the Mayan calendar, this deck purports to examine the new "spiritual era" that will be ushered in on that auspicious date. However, with a color scheme dominated by grays and browns, and scenery that is characterized by crags, deserts, swamps, and the like, the images clearly play to some of the more apocalyptic depictions of that chronological milestone. Which doesn't make it a bad deck by any means... just perhaps a bit schizophrenic. 78 cards in standard cardboard box.

|
Fine art photographic tarot that's much more about mood than symbols. The deck's eroticism, though tasteful, caused five printers to turn down the project before a Canadian company agreed to take on the job. This final edition differs from the majors-only prototype edition in coloration, size, and the inclusion of a thin gold border along the left and bottom edges of each card. The titles were moved from a top-edge overlay into the bottom border. Some viewers may be disturbed by Corbett's use of sexuality and implied violence in some cards. Our sample scans contain some cards with adult-oriented material; viewing of our samples is resticted to persons 18 years of age and over.

Surreal with a "dark" feel, the Akron Tarot is a dramatic and stylish, fully-illustrated deck with much to say. According to a review by noted tarot authority K. Frank Jensen, the deck's creation was motivated and overseen by Swiss philosopher Akron, but with some of the work credited to Akron's circle of students/followers. The illustrations are by Bilder von S.O. Huttengrund. The deck includes two extra cards: An extra devil card with two aspects (The Black Goddess when upright; The Scarlet Anima when reversed). and an unnumbered card called The Dark Child. Some readers and students of tarot will likely be unnerved by the unapologetically stark and somewhat ominous flavor of the artwork -- but for those who can see past the surface, the Akron Tarot has a great deal of useful information to offer. Available only with large accompanying manual, which has not been translated from the original German into any other language.

Printed on 100% cotton rag paper with archival ink, and housed in a wooden hinge-lid box, this special edition of Place's Alchemical deck is designed as a fine art piece that will last a lifetime. Gone are the columnar borders of the original Thorson's edition, allowing the images to occupy the full expanse of the card. Digitally revised to allow for more color depth and accuracy, this deck also includes two versions of the "Lovers" card -- the Thorsons published version, and an original version rejected by the publishers as "too risqué".

Expanded, 78-card edition of Chronata's 2006 limited edition All Hallows Tarot majors deck. The symbolism of the minor arcana is largely patterned after that of the Waite-Smith deck. Colorful divination tarot, with illustrations rendered in a style reminiscent of the old "Prince Valiant" comic strips. Despite a bit of a cartoony look, the deck actually boasts some solid symbolic tableaus. Still in print after nearly 25 years, this is one that has to go under the "Classics" column.

A later edition of the noted Astrological Tarot by Muchery and Armengol. In this edition, published in 1957 by Editions du Chariot, Paris, the cards were printed on uncut sheets -- 16 sheets with three cards each. The backs were left plain white. Despite the name, the deck is not designed as a tarot at all, but rather as an original cartomantic system using astrological symbolism for its foundation.

Unusual double-sided tarot pack, linking tarot symbolism to 'the energies of colour.' On one side of each card is a traditional tarot card image; on the other side is a picture of the card's related 'aura-Soma Equilibrium bottle,' showing the related color energies for that card. Variously published in editions of 98 and 100 cards -- the 78 cards of the 'traditional' tarot, plus additional major arcana cards cards to complete the Aura Soma color series. The additional cards feature pictures of angelic and energy beings, representing alternate forms of the major arcana cards (0 - 19 in the 98 card version, 0 - 22 in the 100 card version).

The legends and characters of and Camelot are featured in this colorful offering from Italian tarot publisher Lo Scarabeo. Criticized by some as "too pretty", but hey -- there's no pleasing some folks. Yeah, the women are a little too unrealistically thin and busty... but if you can get past the body image thing, there's some interesting drama going on here, and a fair amount of tarot food-for-thought in each scene. 78 cards in cardboard box.

|
Luigi Scapini, creator of such popular decks as the Tarocco delle Vetrate and Medieval Scapini Tarot, takes on the task of creating a deck centering around the theme of "wine" (thus the source of the deck's title: Bacchus, the Roman god of wine). According to the accompanying booklet, "The 16 Court Cards... represent today's most important wine-producing countries, whereas the 40 Numeral Cards refer to the agricultural, business, and recreations activities linked to wine." The details of which countries and which activities correspond to which cards are not specified in the booklet, leaving the viewer to make these determinations on their own. The images are not consistently among Scapini's better tarot illustrations, but the cards nonetheless exhibit a colorful playfulness with a certain appeal.

While ostensibly a majors-only deck, the Tarot Bagong Sining actually encompasses 44 cards, providing a male and a female version for each and every image. If Waite and Smith had been into shaking their booties, this might have been the deck they created. Bellydancers were photographed against greenscreens, then digitally composited against backgrounds to become tarot cards. The thematic elements are clearly based on Waite and Smith. The suits are Canes (= Wands), Drums (= Cups), Swords (= Swords) and Zills (= Pentacles). The purple costume in The Judgement card is an original 'Madam Alba', from Egypt.

Dark, erotic tarot featuring images from the work of Spanish comic book and book cover illustrator Luis Royo. Culled from Royo's existing work, the designs are sometimes a bit of a stretch as far as their ability to express the tarot archetypes. Still, Royo's rather dark and erotic style evokes a powerful emotional response for many -- and in many ways, isn't that what much of tarot is about? The Ace - 10 pip cards are non-scenic.

|
Self-described as "a contemporary urban deck set in New York City," the Tarot of the Boroughs is a fun addition to that subgenre of tarots that might be classified as "Slice-of-Life" decks. However, in contrast to some of the better-known classic photographic decks, such as the Mountain Dream Tarot and the Siri New York Tarot, the pictures are in color instead of black-and-white. Several noted New York writers and visual/performing artists modeled for the deck, including Moby and Mwt Shekemet. The images are sometimes patterned after the Waite-Smith meanings, and sometimes not. But regardless of how you interpret them, there's definitely some nice food-for-thought-and-discussion to be found in the 78 tableaus that Weber and Courtney present.

More than simply a tarot that includes astrological correspondences, each card in this fully-illustrated deck is represented by a particular planet or constellation. An entire range of night sky assemblages is used -- not just the standard 12 signs of the zodiac. The Court card princesses are aligned with one of the four seasons, and the remaining three Court cards in each suit are matched to their traditional elemental correspondences (Fire for Wands, Water for Cups, Air for Swords, and Earth for Pentacles), in their mutable, fixed, and cardinal forms.

In a market currently overrun by Celtic- and fairy-themed decks, this tarot's title suggests the ultimate pandering sop to unoriginality. Surprisingly, however, there's a bit of an unexpected twist here. Beautiful, yes... but McElroy and Minivaev have managed to give these images a rather interestingly edgy flavor. Though not a "dark" deck per se, there's some definite drama to be found among the whimsy, setting this assemblage apart from the fluffy, frilly fey folk decks that dominate this subgenre.

An appealing entry into the arena of erotic tarots, the Tarot Chaste is explicit but largely tasteful. The deck uses female models exclusively. The black-and-white photographs offer some good drama, and while it can sometimes (but not always) be difficult to latch the images to traditional tarot interpretations, there's some excellent drama to be found here. And -- by gosh, we'll say it -- it's just darn sexy. NOTE: Card samples contain sexually explicit images; viewing is restricted to persons 18 years of age and older.

The images in this slightly unusual deck were inspired by the work of P.D. Ouspensky, the Russian philosopher who explored the idea of higher dimensions of existence. The design is definitely not well-suited to divination or readings, as the backs of the cards change depending on the suit or arcana of the card front: a winged angel head on a grey-green background adorns the backs of the major arcana, while each of the minor arcana display their suit symbol set against a different color (wands=orange, cups=green, swords=blue, pentacles=yellow). The minor arcana pip cards seemed to be modeled variously after Crowley and the Regardie/Wang Golden Dawn deck, with varying degrees of additional scenic decoration. 78 cards in standard cardboard box.

Cruel Thing Tarot Luciano Vecchio

If there was ever a deck that attests to the big "tarot melting pot" of the 21st century, the Cruel Thing tarot might just be that deck. An Argentine artist with an Italian name, whose tarot illustrations definitely reflect the Japanese anime/manga style and show a strong symbolic influence of the 19th century British occultists, gets published by a Spanish cardmaker. (And, for what it's worth, we actually acquire this product ourselves through a German distributor.) Based on the Cruel Thing graphic novels by Vecchio and Argentine author Lean (that's apparently her full name, or at least her complete pen name), the majors and courts are dramatic in that cool, comic-booky kind of way. The stark, flat, limited color palette of black, white, and red creates a truly visceral effect. The minor arcana cards are only minimally illustrated -- but anyone familiar with the Waite/Smith tarot will immediately recognize the arrangement of the pips and the sparse-but-clear symbols to have been pulled directly from that deck. If you don't like the illustration style, or care for decks that are rather unflinching in their inclusion of darker symbology, then it's doubtful that this deck will grow on you. Otherwise, this baby is definitely worth a closer look.

|
One of our favorite tarot artists -- Ly Narciso -- is at it again, with another engaging and totally splendiferous foray into thought-provoking imagery. In his Tarot of the Curious East, Narciso experiments with "cultural collaging" -- bringing together elements from a variety of Asian mythos to explore various angles of the major arcana symbolism. The cards are oriented sideways -- that is, landscape instead of portrait -- giving the deck a sweeping, almost wall-mural feel.

Not just done in the "Dali" style, not just compiled from existing work... this deck was actually created by Salvador Dali. According to Rachel Pollack in her book, The New Tarot, Dali was originally approached by the producers of the James Bond film Live and Let Die to create the tarot cards that would be used in the film -- but ultimately rejected the work Dali provided as being too "unrecognizable" as tarot for a mainstream film audience. Ultimately, the design project was undertaken by the much lesser-known Fergus Hall... but Dali proceeded to complete his deck anyway, which was published by the Spanish firm of Comas. Dali included himself in the deck as The Magician and the King of Pentacles, while his wife Gala appears on The Empress card. The Comas edition of the deck is packaged in a red flocked slipcase, and the cards have gold-gilt edging. 78 cards in flip-top cardboard box, encased in velveteen shelfbox.

This edition differs from the standard, more common, and more expensive edition of the Dali deck in several ways: 1) the gold-gilt edging on the cards has been eliminated, 2) a number statement of limited edition has been included, 3) the full-size book by Fiebig is included, and 4) larger packaging (to accommodate the book) is provided, although the same red-flocked material is used for the lid as for the smaller-box Dali. If you've had enough of vampire tarots for a while, why not try sticking wings on those gloomy goth dudes and calling them Dark Angels? Actually, as dark-themed decks go, this one isn't half bad -- although we still wish that Lo Scarabeo could find a way to either pare down or better reproduce some of the more cluttered illustrations. There's some good drama here, with some nice storytelling possibilities. As usual, if you don't like decks with a more somber bent, you're not going to care for this one. And if you do, you might.

A deck with images clearly inspired by the Cthulu mythos -- indeed, the word "Necronomicon" is used in the deck's title for all languages except English (due to North American copyright issues, perhaps?). The images do a fine job of capturing a Lovecraft-esque universe, though the results are probably too dark for the tastes of many tarot readers. If the images don't appeal for readings, however, it may be worth bearing in mind that the rich drama depicted here would lend itself well to making this a fine story-telling deck.

Tarot that matches sketches and art by the great Leonardo da Vinci with the tarot archetypes. The aim of author Caitlin Matthews' exercise is at once profound and unpretentious. Fully illustrated, the major arcana card titles have been changed to compatible alternatives in many instances, and the suits have been named after the four classical elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth), rather than their traditional symbolic equivalents (Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles). Published simultaneously in the U.S. by St. Martin's Press and in the U.K. by Connections Book Publishing.

Tarot images with symbolism inspired by Bocacchio's literary masterpiece, The Decamerone. Like its often violent and bawdy wellspring, this deck isn't bashful; nudity and bloodshed abound, although some of the major arcana cards have been toned down a bit from the tarot's original release as fine art collectible under the Ideogramma imprint. The minor arcana pip cards feature small inset illustrations against a background of Marseille-style pip arrangements. NOTE: Samples contain sexually explicit imagery; viewing is restricted to persons 18 years of age and over.

Quirky, original fully-illustrated tarot, with elements inspired by tombstones and images from mental asylums. As such, some folks will find this deck too "dark" for their tastes. But for those that can get past some of the slightly shocking imagery, the experience of this deck can prove highly rewarding. Dark or not, the images have a stylistic appeal that's hard to ignore. And, oddly enough, despite its eccentricities, the deck exhibits pretty firm roots in the Waite-Smith tradition. 78 cards in large cardboard shelfbox.

Interesting execution of a theme that could have been disasterously handled in the context of tarot. The deck is surprisingly multicultural, featuring dragons as they have appeared in many different mythologies. The minor arcana suits each focus on dragons as envisioned by cultures on four distinct continents: African (Wands - actually frequently featuring dinosaurs, possibly the historical basis for many dragon myths?), Asian (Cups), European (Swords), and South American (Pentacles). 78 cards in standard cardboard box.

Bulgarian tarot presumably designed in the style of, or as a tribute to, Albrecht Durer. A self-portrait of Durer appears on the backs of the cards. However, the illustrative style of the cards is a bit too brightly colored and lacking in subtle shading and detail to evoke a strong comparison to Durer's work. The images are appealing nonetheless, and the pip cards are fully illustrated.

Simple, yet pleasing, hieroglyphic-like illustrations characterize this tarot with a definite 'new age' feel. Some of the major arcana cards have been renamed, but all stick close to the traditional designations. Each card is associated with earth, air, fire, or water -- hence the name 'Elemental Tarot.' The major arcana feature stanzas from a Gnostic poem selected specifically to fit the meaning of the card. The pip cards are fully illustrated. Originally published in 1988 as a boxed set with small hardcover book, the deck was reissued in 1999 in a paperback edition with the cards shrinkwrapped to the book.

|
Colorful, if perhaps a bit sterile, CGI-style illustrations bring a Tolken-esque world to life in this deck that pays homage to one of the most beloved themes in the fantasy genre. Each of the minor arcana suits tells a complete mythological tale representative of the creators' concepts regarding tarot's larger lessons. Published by Lo Scarabeo, the cards lack titles throughout the deck -- an unusual twist from a company whose decks are usually littered with titles in a half-dozen languages.

The major arcana of this 78-card Lo Scarabeo deck are drawn from the illustrations of the so-called Charles VI Tarot. Artist Giodano Berti has interpreted and replaced the six cards missing from the original. The deck is then expanded to a full 78 cards, with Berti imagining what the minor arcana of such a deck might have looked like. The multi-lingual titles -- so prominent on many Lo Scarabeo decks -- are placed relatively unobtrusivley running up along the left-hand card borders.

The linking of tarot with classic fairy tales from around the world is a project that's been done to death... but somehow, the idea still retains its charm. If you don't already have a fairy tale-themed tarot -- or if you do, and like that sort of deck so much that you'd consider investing in another -- this one should do nicely. Charming artwork compliments the nicely-matched stories. What can we say? It's always fun to match up archetypes from different arenas, and see what might emerge...

Colorful, fully illustrated deck that melds an eclectic variety of fairytales and folklore to tarot's archetypes and divinatory meanings. Many of the stories depicted may be less familiar to North American audiences; a number of eastern European, Indian, and Asian stories are represented alongside tales by Hans Christian Anderson, the Brothers Grimm, and other popular Western European myths and traditional sources. No numbers appear on the major arcana cards, but the card titles appear at the bottom of each card, along with the name of the fairytale depicted in the card illustration.

"Fenestra" means window -- and the window metaphor is always an appropriate one for tarot. In this subtly-colored deck (lots of soft blues, lavendars, and earth tones), the designer has attempted to make each card appear as though the viewer is observing the image through a window. The illustrations are imbued with a subtle stained-glass feel. The scenes and symbols are very RWS-compatible.
